Change the Narrative, Understanding AI consent and digital harm.

Tell us your plans for Safer Internet Day: Our Safer Internet Day campaign, Change the Narrative, is a week-long awareness and education initiative aimed at educating 1st to 3rd year students about the dangers and ethical issues associated with the misuse of artificial intelligence, particularly AI image-generation and image-manipulation tools.
The campaign focuses on the growing concern around websites and applications that allow users to create fake or altered images of real people without their knowledge or consent. These tools are increasingly being misused to create sexualised or humiliating images, with women, teenagers, and girls being disproportionately targeted.
Throughout the week, students will take part in structured, age-appropriate lessons and discussions delivered during class time. These sessions will:
•Explain, in simple terms, what AI image-generation tools are and how they are used
•Highlight the serious risks of creating, viewing, or sharing manipulated images
•Emphasise the importance of consent, privacy, and respect online
•Explore the emotional, social, and reputational harm caused by these images
•Outline the potential legal and school disciplinary consequences
•Teach students what to do if they encounter harmful or distressing content
A key aim of the campaign is to help students understand that even if an image is fake, the harm it causes is real. Once an image is created or shared online, control is often lost, and the impact on the person involved can be long-lasting.
By running the campaign across a full week rather than a single day, the school can reinforce key messages, allow time for reflection and discussion, and ensure that students fully understand both the risks and their responsibilities when using digital technologies.
Ultimately, Change the Narrative seeks to empower students to make safer choices online, challenge harmful behaviour, support one another, and contribute to a school culture that promotes dignity, accountability, and respect in digital spaces.
