AI, Ethics and Our Online World – A Conversation with Dr. Abeba Birhane

In this two-part episode of Casting the Net, Webwise Youth Panelist Ross speaks with world-leading AI expert Dr. Abeba Birhane, founder and lead of the AI Accountability Lab at the ADAPT Research Centre in Trinity College Dublin.

Drawing on questions from Ross and fellow members of the Webwise Youth Panel, Part 1 explores the ethics and societal impact of AI, why the data used to train AI matters, and what teenagers should know about how their data is used. They also discuss common misconceptions about AI and how young people can navigate misinformation.

In Part 2, Ross and Abeba continue the conversation, exploring AI chatbots, deepfakes and the growing role AI plays in young people’s lives. They discuss using AI responsibly, the importance of effective safeguards and policy, and what Abeba believes young people should know as AI continues to develop and shape our online world.
