The negative effect of online hate speech is an increasing problem, and it is important that young people are equipped to understand the issue, and are able to develop strategies to make a positive change.

Registration is now open for a free online course called, “Hacking hate – How to empower young people to understand and disrupt online hate” MOOC, which offers educators the opportunity to learn about the issue and find ways to empower young people to be more resilient.

The MOOC, starting on September 16th, is based on the SELMA Toolkit and builds upon a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) approach to tackle the problem of online hate.

Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at teachers, school leaders, youth workers, parents, and anyone interested in the topic of online hate speech. Participants in the course will be encouraged to pass on the knowledge they gain to their networks of young people.

What is the SELMA Toolkit?

Targeting young people aged 11-16, SELMA (Social and Emotional Learning for Mutual Awareness) is a 2 year project, co-funded by the European Commission, which aims to tackle the problem of online hate speech by promoting mutual awareness, tolerance, and respect. The SELMA Toolkit provides users with interactive tools and materials to help young people to understand what hate speech is, its effect on them and those around them, and what can be done to make a difference.
